Μια ντουζίνα χρόνια πριν σοκάρει η Ελλάδα το ευρωπαϊκό (και όχι μόνο) ποδόσφαιρο με την κατάκτηση του Euro της Πορτογαλίας, μία άλλη χώρα είχε συντελέσει και αυτή ένα παρόμοιο θαύμα. Στις 26 Ιουνίου 1992 η Δανία κατακτούσε την κορυφή της Ευρώπης επικρατώντας στον τελικό με 2-0 της Γερμανίας. Ένα παραμύθι βγαλμένο από τα πιο όμορφα του Χανς Κρίστιαν Άντερσεν και το οποίο ξεκίνησε στις παραλίες!
Η Δανία δεν είχε καταφέρει να πάρει την πρόκριση για τη διοργάνωση που φιλοξενήθηκε στα γήπεδα της Σουηδίας καθώς στα προκριματικά τερμάτισε πίσω από την Γιουγκοσλαβία. Ο πόλεμος όμως λύγισε τους “πλάβι” με αποτέλεσμα την τελευταία στιγμή να κληθούν οι Δανοί να πάρουν τις θέσεις τους. Και κάποιοι παίκτες άφησαν κυριολεκτικά τις παραλίες για να ενσωματωθούν στην αποστολή, καθώς είχαν αρχίσει τις διακοπές τους.
Προσθέστε και την απουσία του μεγάλου αστέρα της ομάδας, Μίκαελ Λάουντρουπ, λόγω ρήξης με τον τον προπονητή Μέλερ-Νίλσεν, και θα καταλάβετε για ποιο λόγο σχεδόν όλοι θεωρήσουν την παρουσία της Δανίας διακοσμητική. Ωστόσο το ισόπαλο 0-0 στην πρεμιέρα με την Αγγλία στον πρώτο όμιλο της έδωσε ψυχολογία.

Ακολούθησε η ήττα από την διοργανώτρια Σουηδία (1-0) και ο “τελικός” με τη Γαλλία για την πρόκριση στους “4”. Ο Λάρσεν πέτυχε στο 8′ το πρώτο γκολ της ομάδας στη διοργάνωση, ο Παπέν απάντησε στο 60′ για να έρθει ο Έλστρουπ και να δώσει στη Δανία την πρόκριση στα ημιτελικά γράφοντας το 2-1 στο 78′.

Εκεί περίμενε η πρωταθλήτρια Ευρώπης του 1988, Ολλανδία που βρέθηκε δύο φορές πίσω στο σκορ από τα γκολ του Λάρσεν (5′, 33′). Είχε όμως ισάριθμες απαντήσεις με τους Μπέργκαμπ (23′) και Ράικαρντ (86′) και ο ημιτελικός οδηγήθηκε στα πέναλτι. Εκεί ο μοναδικός που δεν σκόραρε ήταν ο Φαν Μπάστεν τον οποίο σταμάτησε ο Σμάιχελ.
