Το βραβείο του κορυφαίου ποδοσφαιριστή για το 2018 πήγε στον Λούκα Μόντριτς, όμως ο Κροάτης της Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης δεν ήταν η πρώτη επιλογή του Έλληνα δημοσιογράφου που πήρε μέρος στην ψηφοφορία.

Ο Λούκα Μόντριτς κατέκτησε τη Χρυσή Μπάλα για το 2018 , για πρώτη φορά στην καριέρα του, στο γκαλά που διοργάνωσε το γαλλικό περιοδικό "France Football".

Ανάμεσα στους δημοσιογράφους που ψήφισαν για να αναδειχθεί ο Κροάτης μέσοεπιθετικός της Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης κορυφαίος ποδοσφαιριστής της χρονιάς, βρέθηκε και ο Έλληνας Μάνος Σταραμόπουλος, ανταποκριτής του "France Football" στην Ελλάδα, που ξεχώρισε τον Αντουάν Γκριεζμάν για την κατάκτηση του Παγκοσμίου Κυπέλλου 2018 με την Εθνική Γαλλίας.

Ακολούθησε ο Λούκα Μόντριτς στη δεύτερη θέση, ο κεντρικός αμυντικός της Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης Ραφαέλ Βαράν στην τρίτη, ο σούπερσταρ της Γιουβέντους Κριστιάνο Ρονάλντο στην τέταρτη κι ο Αιγύπτιος εξτρέμ της Λίβερπουλ Μοχάμεντ Σαλάχ στην πέμπτη.
